Carer Break Fund

New fund for unpaid carers in Devon

Before COVID-19 there were approximately 85,000 unpaid carers in Devon, but it is estimated that this has risen to over 120,000 due to increased issues which carers are facing during the pandemic.

Caring can be one of the most rewarding but also stressful roles we face in our lives and no more so than when you are new to caring or facing increased responsibilities for your loved ones.

We recognise that this is a very difficult time for unpaid carers and Devon County Council have responded by providing funding to ensure that carers are able to take a break from their caring role, even if it is just for short periods.

The new Carer Break Fund will enable carers who might not have been able to access a fund such as this before, to take short breaks to enjoy a multitude of activities, hobbies and time out from your caring role.

Some of the innovative ways in which carers have already benefitted from the new fund in our pilot scheme include being able to:

  • Participate in a wellbeing activity; yoga, mindfulness and sports, whether online or face to face
  • Pursue a hobby such as; purchasing garden tools and plants or buying art and crafts materials
  • Undertake a relaxing activity including; reading, making a jigsaw or listening to music
  • Help to towards buying technology such as a smart phone or tablet to enable carers to meet up with their family and friends online
  • Or, even to help towards a night away

Funding available

By applying for the new fund you could receive a minimum payment of £50 which may increase to £100 or more depending on your caring circumstances.

The payment can be used to purchase anything that will give you a break from your caring role, apart from items specifically for your cared for person that should be provided by the NHS or Social Services.

Who can apply?

If you are 18 or over, caring for an adult who lives in the Devon County Council area and you have not been identified as having eligible needs as part of your Health and Wellbeing Check, then you can apply.
