Strengthening support for LGBTQ+ carers

LGBTQ+ Progress Pride Flag

We want to ensure that all carers can benefit from the support we offer. To that end we have identified some groups of carers who we know we have to work harder to reach.

For example we know that being lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans and a carer can bring additional issues and challenges. LGBTQ+ carers may feel out of place in traditional support groups or uncomfortable about ‘coming out’ to people who can help. They may be anxious about accessing services or have concerns that they may not be LGBT+ friendly or be able to meet their needs.

In developing our new service we will be working with LGBTQ+ carers and organisations to develop a plan to ensure that this is achieved and will include:

  • Training for staff and volunteers
  • Community based outreach work and publicity
  • Carers support groups and other activities/events

If you have ideas or suggestions for how we can improve our work with LGBTQ+ carers please get in touch – we are very keen to hear from you.
